The most famous local endemic of the Romanian flora, this
subalpine calciphile species is located only in Piatra Craiului
Mountains from the Meridional Carpathians. However the Romanian
naturalists which frequently describe in their books this species as
'unique' are rarely aware that the taxon is in fact
vicariant and hence closely related to the very similar Dianthus
alpinus L. (see also here)
from the north-eastern Alps (Austria), probably less
to Dianthus
repens Willd. (also here and
here)
an Arctic Siberian - Alaskan species, Dianthus
nitidus Waldst. et Kit. from Tatra and
Dianthus scardicus Wettst. of the Dinarian Mountains.
Better pictures of Dianthus callizonus here, here
and here.
